Learn how to create and manage development plans

Updated over a week ago

The new Development Plans features in the employee profile help managers and employees track professional growth.

With the development plan for employees, you can:

  • Create clear growth paths for employees, which can increase their motivation and make them more productive.

  • Provide employees with a clear roadmap to follow, simplifying the process of meeting their goals.

  • Support employees in their career growth to enhance job satisfaction, reduce turnover, and retain valuable talent.

  • Identify key responsibilities, analyze performance gaps, and create SMART objectives to address them.

Please note that the Development Plan feature is currently in beta testing. If you're interested in trying out this feature, please contact the support team via chat or send an email to support@peopleforce.io.

Set the permissions

By default, managers and team leads have Edit access to manage development plans. All other employees have None access for others' development plans but have Edit permissions for their own development plans.

A new permission has been added in Settings > Security > Roles & Permissions to manage the development plans of related employees.

The available options are:

  • None: Employees cannot view other employees' development plans in the Performance tab of their profiles.

  • View: Employees can view development plans but cannot make any changes.

  • Edit: Employees have the ability to edit development plans.

Access and create development plan types

A new section for managing Development plan types is now available under Settings > Performance > Development plans. There, you can access default plan types, including Individual Development Plan (IDP), Personal Development Plan (PDP), Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), and Career Plan.

To create custom plan types click the + New type button, which opens simple input fields for quick setup.

These types serve as folders for organizing your templates effectively.

Create, edit and delete templates

You can access all templates through Settings > Performance > Development plans.

To create a new template, select the type to which it will belong. Then, click the + Template button, provide a name for the template, and add a description.

Switch plan types and save changes directly in the editor.

To edit or delete a Development Plan template, click the three-dots icon next to the template you wish to modify. From the dropdown menu, select the desired action: Edit or Delete.

Create development plan from scratch

Managers can create development plans for their direct reports, and employees can create their own plans within the Development Plans card in the employee profile.

To do this, go to the employee's profile, select the Performance tab, and click either + Add or + New Development Plan. A modal will appear where you can enter the plan details, such as the name, date range, and type. Save your changes.

If you start creating a development plan from scratch but later decide to use a template, simply click the Apply template button. On the next page, select the desired template and edit it to suit your company’s needs.

Create new Development plan using a template

The new functionality allows you to create a development plan using a template directly from the Development Plans card in the employee profile. Here's how to do it:

1. Navigate to the employee profile > Performance tab.

2. Click + Add or + New development plan to open a full-screen modal with the template library.

3. Choose a template from the side panel, review the details, and click Use template to load it into the editor.

4. Review the fields in the pop-up window:

  • Title: Inherited from the template but can be customized as needed.

  • Date range: Defaults to a start date of the current date and an end date 12 months later, but both can be adjusted.

  • Type: Can be chosen from the dropdown or inherited from the template, with the option to modify.

5. Edit the template and save your changes.

View your development plan

Employees can view their development plans in the Performance section of their profiles. The plans are organized into two tabs:

  • Open: Displays all active development plans.

  • Completed: Shows all plans the employee has successfully completed.

Complete your plan

Each development plan has a specific time range, and when it's time to close it, the employee must do so within the system. Once closed, the plan will automatically move to the Completed tab under the Performance > Development Plan section.

To close a development plan, navigate to the plan you want to close, click the three-dots icon, and select Close from the menu.

Share a link for a development plan

An employee can share a link to their development plan with their manager for approval or edits. The manager has the ability to leave comments on the development plan and make edits, as all managers have permission to do so.

Employees can also include a link to the development plan during the review, 1-on-1 meeting, or in the OKR.

To share the link, navigate to the development plan you wish to share and click Copy link. Then, send the link to the manager for approval.
